A Tribute to Dennis R. Allred

On April 19, 1978, Kitsap County Sheriff's Deputy Dennis R. Allred paid the ultimate price for the citizens of Kitsap.  Deputy Allred stopped to assist what appeared to be a stranded motorist, only to be ambushed, shot, and killed by the occupants of the vehicle. Deputies and law enforcement officers today face the same deadly potential during all facets of duty.  Deputy Jon Sandberg describes what life as a deputy was like in the years following Dennis Allred's end of watch.

"When I first started in 1982, the death of Dennis Allred was still fresh in the memory of the members of this department.  When you were in FTO (field training), it was part of the training to go past the location where he was shot, and it was stressed that there is a very serious side to this job.  As the time has gone by, most of everyone who was here in 1978 have gone on to other things, and what we have left is a picture in the hall of the Port Orchard office.  We have to remember that Dennis is more than a picture, but he was one of us, and part of our heritage that we cannot forget."  -Jon Sandberg, April 13, 2000.

A Tribute to Steve L. Wolfe

Deputy Steve Wolfe #53 was commissioned as a Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff on January 26, 1977.  Steve ended his watch on July 28, 1998 due to cancer.  Steve was well liked by his fellow deputies and is missed.  Deputy Jim Rye had the following to say about Steve.  "I knew Steve very well as we worked the north end of Kitsap County together.  Steve was a quiet man and would go out of his way to help his fellow officer.  He'd do anything to help you. I remember Steve being an active member of his church and he loved power lifting."

K-9 Canto

Service Dates 8/1993 - 4/2002

Died 4/2003

The Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff's Guild says "Goodbye" to a truly outstanding K-9, Canto. Canto began his career with the KCSO in August of 1993. K-9 Handler Jay Kent and Canto worked the streets of Kitsap County and neighboring counties for nearly nearly 9 years. Canto had over 500 career arrests. Canto retired in April of 2002 and was put to sleep due to medical complications in early April, 2003. Canto now rests at his home in Seabeck.

"Canto was not only the finest K-9 I have ever had the pleasure of working with, but he was also a personal friend of our family. I knew Canto not just as an exceptional police officer, but also a "gentle giant" whom I trusted around my young daughter and family for several years. Canto was very "officer friendly," and on numerous occasions he assisted in apprehending violent and sometimes fighting criminals where officers didn't have to worry about getting bit themselves. Canto was intelligent beyond belief. I remember his favorite past time was playing fetch. All you had to do was tell Canto to "Go find a stick!," and he would look around until he found a stick that you could throw for him. I will never forget the one time I told Canto to find a stick and he came trotting back up to me carrying a 4x4x8 piece of lumber! I know we all will miss this well-loved law enforcement brother."

Deputy Ron Zude, April 15, 2003
